As I said in Garden Update: Oct. 23, 2020, today was full of planting. I put the broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, arugula, chard and spinach in the beds. Hopefully they will be happier in the compost like the other plants. I also put in some seeds for lettuces, and second plantings of carrots, beets, turnips and radishes.

Now that I have a way to easily start seeds, I thought it would be a good idea to start some backups to what I just transplanted, plus extras of things that did not do so well.

The seed starts aren’t as big as I thought they would be after a few weeks of growth. I don’t know if it’s the soil mix I’m using, not enough light or water, or something else. Some of the true leaves are wilting. We have some cold weather coming in, so I think I’ll put what I can into the beds this weekend to see if they can recover.

It’s a different story over in the beds. I have never seen radishes with tops this prolific!

I don’t know that I’ve had radishes grow this fast. Only a couple of weeks from seed and they’re almost ready to eat! I might be able to get another round of these in the same spot before the brassicas (soon to be transplanted) get too big.

It was also thinning day in the seed rack. Most of the plants got a trimming. As always, the trimmings went back into the garden to feed the soil.

I took some time to inspect the radishes this morning. The French Breakfast radishes are extremely prolific. These are already starting to form.

Speaking of radishes, it was time to thin these out. The plants all have some well-formed true leaves. Here’s a tip for thinning: Instead of throwing the thinned plants in the compost or garbage, just toss them on top of your soil! These will break down in place, recycling the nutrients that they pulled out. I do this with almost all of my trimmings as long as there’s no sign of disease.

There’s a lot more happening in the raised beds. Almost too much to fit into a quick update. The radishes are picking up steam. Some of them are pushing out their first true leaves.

In another bed, the carrots and bunching onions are finally making an appearance. I was especially worried about the carrots. They are notoriously difficult to germinate. It has taken two light waterings a day to keep the surrounding soil moist enough to make this happen.

We have signs of life in the raised beds! Radishes and some beets planted earlier this week have popped up.

We also have some action from the marigolds and the first true leaves coming out in the spinach.

At this point we should really start seeing things take off all throughout the garden.
