I don’t know that I’ve had radishes grow this fast. Only a couple of weeks from seed and they’re almost ready to eat! I might be able to get another round of these in the same spot before the brassicas (soon to be transplanted) get too big.

It was also thinning day in the seed rack. Most of the plants got a trimming. As always, the trimmings went back into the garden to feed the soil.

Peas! The peas couldn’t be any happier. The growth rate is through the roof and the bed is greening up nicely.

I also have an interesting visitor in the mulch. I’ve always heard that fungi are a sign of healthy decay so I don’t imagine this is something to worry about. This stuff came around back in the spring and disappeared as soon as the 95 degree days came around.

Back to our original programming.

On the seed starting rack, the heat has been brutal on the lettuce. I maybe should have waited until cooler weather to start those.

Things are looking much better in the raised beds. Green beans are coming in full force! Hopefully that will continue for a couple of more weeks and we can have plenty of seeds for next spring.

And finally, the carrots and parsnips are looking happy. It’s not going to end up with perfect germination, but I can’t complain considering the heat and lack of rain.

A cool front came through late last night giving us an absolutely beautiful day. I spent most of it working outside on the back porch, soaking it all in before the cold, wet winter sets in.

Only one photo for today since nothing much has changed. Of all of the plants I’ve started from seed this season, I think basil makes my favorite-looking seedling. Just look at it!

I took some time to inspect the radishes this morning. The French Breakfast radishes are extremely prolific. These are already starting to form.

Speaking of radishes, it was time to thin these out. The plants all have some well-formed true leaves. Here’s a tip for thinning: Instead of throwing the thinned plants in the compost or garbage, just toss them on top of your soil! These will break down in place, recycling the nutrients that they pulled out. I do this with almost all of my trimmings as long as there’s no sign of disease.

Welp. I made my first big-ish mistake. The shade cloth has proven its worth by me forgetting to put it down after watering yesterday morning. Everything was pretty dry and the soil took a lot of water to get hydrated again. I won’t be making that mistake again.

The citrus trees also looked a bit sad after a harsher than expected sun yesterday so I gave them a good soak. They’re looking much happier now.
