I wrote yesterday about transplanting most of the seedlings into the raised beds but completely forgot to show you the result. Well, here it is. Things are looking a bit pitiful but they should turn around quickly. We have a couple of days ahead with overcast skies and rain.

The garden basket I mentioned Saturday is complete. I put the finishing touches on it last night. I can’t wait to see it full of veggies!

As I said in Garden Update: Oct. 23, 2020, today was full of planting. I put the broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, arugula, chard and spinach in the beds. Hopefully they will be happier in the compost like the other plants. I also put in some seeds for lettuces, and second plantings of carrots, beets, turnips and radishes.

Now that I have a way to easily start seeds, I thought it would be a good idea to start some backups to what I just transplanted, plus extras of things that did not do so well.

The snow peas are growing at a great rate. The plants are starting to grab on to the first row of trellis string.

In the wood shop, I’m putting the finishing touches on a project that’s been on my mind for a while. Here’s a harvest basket for the garden! It’s made from red oak and built with only hand tools, besides boring any holes. Those were done with an electric drill since I don’t yet a brace and bits.

The seed starts aren’t as big as I thought they would be after a few weeks of growth. I don’t know if it’s the soil mix I’m using, not enough light or water, or something else. Some of the true leaves are wilting. We have some cold weather coming in, so I think I’ll put what I can into the beds this weekend to see if they can recover.

It’s a different story over in the beds. I have never seen radishes with tops this prolific!

The root crops are doing pretty well. I don’t know if it’s a difference in the varieties, but the golden beets are lagging behind the reds.

Just a bit over in the same bed we have the bunching onions which are looking happy.

I’ve been apprehensive about getting fruit trees. Because of the placement of utilities and existing trees on the property, it’s difficult to find good spot so I should stick to containers. The prospect of keeping something alive in a container for many years is a daunting task. This morning I got some confirmation that I’m doing something right with the citrus trees. I found some new growth on the Satsuma.

As I was thinning out some of the snow peas, I remembered that young pea shoots are edible. So instead of throwing the trimmings back on the bed, I decided to save them for a lunch salad! These have a nutty, slightly sweet taste that I can’t get enough of.
